Independence is the county seat of Montgomery County and is located on the Verdigris River. It is home to national treasures such as Elk City Lake, Little House on the Prairie, and host to one of the largest festivals in Kansas - Neewalloh, held every year the last week of October.
Rich in history, Coffeyville, Kansas sits in the southeast corner of Montgomery County. Home of the famous "Dalton Defender Museum", which tells the story how the towns people of Coffeyville took out the Dalton Gang as they attempted to rob two banks at the same time in 1892. They hold a re-enactment every year in early October.
